Yuney Chonlee

QA Engineer · Test Engineer

G'day! I'm Yuney, a Kiwi Korean living in Vancouver.

An engineer and a quality advocate, I care about how good products get built.

I've been in engineering for the past 11 years and my goal remains the same: using my knowledge and powers for good.

Currently, I'm having fun experimenting with AI-assisted QA workflows to reduce repetitive tasks and identify potential gaps in the testing lifecycle.

When I'm home, you'll probably find me gaming, watching movies, or tinkering with small projects. Away from the keyboard, I'll be trying to hit better shots with either shuttlecocks or golf balls, filming my travels, leading a church youth group, or spending time with my favourite people.

Work Experience

Rival TechnologiesConversational Market Research Platform
Sep 2024 — Present
QA Engineer

I test and investigate features across web applications, APIs, backend services, and third-party integrations. Working closely with developers, product managers, and UX designers, I've helped introduce earlier risk discussions, improve testing workflows, and expand test automation suite to make releases more reliable and efficient. Another area I've been focusing on is accessibility testing, ensuring our platform is inclusive for a diverse range of respondents.

My QE journey is about identifying risks earlier without slowing down delivery, shifting the focus from detecting problems late to preventing or fixing them earlier.

Quality is a shared responsibility, not a final checkpoint.

Sep 2022 — Sep 2024
QA Engineer / Senior QA Engineer

I led the quality strategy within my engineering stream, working closely with developers on testing approaches, exploratory testing, and automation. I developed tools and improved workflows to make testing resources more accessible to developers, with a particular focus on automation reliability and execution efficiency.

Beyond testing, I coached developers on testing techniques and helped establish practices that made quality part of everyday engineering work.

Good quality engineering isn't about finding the most bugs; it's about helping everyone build better software.

Fisher & Paykel HealthcareMedical Device R&D
Nov 2015 — Sep 2022
Product Development Engineer

I developed and rigorously tested respiratory medical devices, primarily the MR850+ Humidifier and confidential internal projects, to meet regulatory requirements and applicable ISO standards.

I collaborated with engineers across mechanical, electrical, and firmware development, as well as teams in process development, operations, procurement, external manufacturing, document control, and legal. My work also involved liaising with overseas offices and external testing laboratories.

I also contributed to developing in-house test equipment and tools for use by other engineers.

Quality wasn't an option; it was the first requirement.

Projects

Guess Who? — Community Prediction Game
Built a live prediction game after a fan community suggested keeping score as an anticipated series unfolded. Who will get the most screen time? Who will become friends—or enemies? Beta-tested it with real users, fixed issues based on feedback, and learned what changes when a side project becomes something people actually use.

Church Mass Slide Automation
Each week, youth leaders update Mass slides with prayers, hymns, and songs. To make the repetitive work easier, I created a reusable template and wrote a script that pulls content from a source to update the presentation automatically.
Google Drive·Google Slides
Designed and built a production website for an early learning centre, helping families explore programs and send enrollment inquiries. Includes serverless forms, spam protection, analytics and search optimization.
